Pearl Lakes, Herefordshire - Pollution with Soya Oil

Pearl Lakes Soya Oil

Fish Legal (as the ACA) brought a claim against Zintec Feed Supplements, an animal feed manufacturer, after soya oil from storage tanks leaked into the Pearl Lake Fishery which is situated in the grounds of a holiday park.

The oil emulsified and caused fish mortalities and a long-term clean-up problem for the owners of the fishery.  However the £17,046.00 compensation secured on their behalf by Fish Legal ensured that remediation works could take place to restore the fishery, compensated them for the time they spent on the clean-up operation and loss of profits from day ticket sales.

The animal feed company was also successfully prosecuted for the incident by the Environment Agency and fined £10,000 and ordered to pay the Agency’s costs of £3,500.

The whole incident could have been simply avoided by placing bunding around the storage tanks to contain any leakages of oil.
