Fish Legal has helped a riparian member block plans to site an industrial chicken complex next to a tributary of the river Towy.

Planning permission for a 32,000 strong ‘free range’ chicken unit near Llandeilo has been refused by Carmarthenshire Council on environmental grounds.

Whilst other respondents highlighted the risk of airborne pollution, Fish Legal raised specific objections on behalf of a riparian member concerned about the potential impact on salmon and sea trout in the Towy from surface water run-off heavily loaded with ammonium and nitrates from poultry manure.

The applicant had failed to properly consider the risks to the Towy – which is both a Special Area of Conservation and a Site of Special Scientific Interest - of siting the large-scale operation on sloping land near one of its tributaries.
